Social Studies Test on Chapter 2 Study Guide

Students will receive a copy of the study guide below in class. Students will have time to review in class on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The test is on Thursday the 21st. Study guides CANNOT be used on the test. Students MUST study.

This test will have 40 questions that includes matching, multiple choice, and short answer responses. Student must know vocabulary, key concepts, how to read a map, and critical thinking skills.

Vocabulary
1. modify- to change something, such as the physical environment.
2. conserve- to save and protect natural resources.
3. landform- the form or shape of part of the Earth's surface.
4. agriculture region- a place where there is much flat land and rich soil for farming.
5. industrial region- a place where many kinds of businesses are located.
6. adapt- to change the way you do something to fit into an environment.
7. ecosystem- all living things interacting and working together.
8. climate- the weather that a place has over a long period of time.
9. renewable resource- a resource that can be replaced in a short time.
10. nonrenewable resource- a resource that takes a long time to replace or cannot be replaced after it is used.
11. coast- flat land near water.
12. elevation- height of land above sea level.
13. irrigate- using pipes to bring water for crops in dry land.

Key Concepts
1. A desert climate is dry with cold nights and hot days.  
2. Tropical climate regions receive the most rainfall.
3. An arctic climate is cool or cold.
4. A cactus, long nosed bat, and jack rabbit living together would be part of a desert ecosystem.
5. A temperate climate region is not as cold as the coldest region and not as hot as the hottest region.
6. Oceans are made up of salt water.
7. Plastic bottles can be recycled easily.
8. Trees are used to make lumber and paper.
9. Oil is a natural resource that is used to both heat a home and fuel a car.
10. An example of people modifying their environment is a company building a dam for irrigation.
11. Building materials that can stay up in strong winds should be used to build a house in an area that often has strong storms and hurricanes.

Critical Thinking
1. What is elevation? What type of landform would be found in areas with the highest elevation? (mountains)
2. What is the best way a miner can help the environment after carving out soil in search of minerals? (Plant trees and other vegetation on that land.)
3. What is an example of a law that helps protect the environment? (Don't throw garbage on the ground and companies can't throw materials in oceans.) Why is it important to have this law?
4. What are 2 things that farmers can do if they live in an area with dry land? (They can irrigate, break up the soil to expose it to the air to kill weeds and keep the soil rich, add chemicals like fertilizers to help crops grow, or use chemicals to kill insects.
5. What are 2 effects or results that a growing population can have on a city?
6. What are 2 thing people do that harms the environment? What can be done to fix the problem?
7. Why is it challenging for an animal to survive in a desert climate? What are 2 ways that desert animals have adapted to their climate?
8. What is a coast? What are 2 things people might enjoy doing if they live along a coast?
