This week's spelling/vocab. test will include dictation, matching, fill in the blanks, and writing sentences. All students MUST study, especially on Thursday!

3. Math Chapter 7 Test
Students should know their multiplication facts for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10. Remember multiplication is the inverse or opposite of division, so if you know your multiplication facts well, you should know the division facts too!

Science Test on Chapter 3 Study Guide

Students will receive a copy of the questions and answers below. This test will cover concepts taught throughout chapter 3 (5 lessons).

Students will have time to review in class on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The test is on Thursday the 25th. Study guides CANNOT be used on the test. Students MUST study.

Lesson 1
1. How would you classify a pine tree? As a nonflowering plant
2. How can you classify a rosebush? As a plant that has a prickly stem
3. What kind of tree has cones and leaves that look like needles? Conifer trees

Lesson 2
4. What might happen to a plant if the tiny holes on the surface of the leaves were covered? Leaves would NOT produce much oxygen and sugar.
5. Leaves turn carbon dioxide and water into what 2 things? Sugar and oxygen
6. How do leaves help plants? They help make food through photosynthesis.
7. Where in a plant can you find tubes that move nutrients from the roots to the leaves? Stem
8. What do plants need for photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight
9. What do the tall thin parts inside of a leaf do? Take in sunlight

Lesson 3
10. Why should you NOT worry about which direction to plant seeds so that the roots grown down into the soil? Roots respond to gravity. No matter which direction a seed is planted, the roots will grow down toward Earth's center.
11. What structures or parts help keep a cactus from losing too much water? Thick, waxy stems
12. How are roots important to a plant? They store food and take in water.
13. A cactus stores the most water in its? Stem
14. What will happen if you plant a bean seed upside down? The roots will still grow down.
15. Which plant has a taproot? Carrot
16. Why do plant roots grow toward Earth's center? Gravity pulls them
17. What is MOST LIKELY the reason a plant bends to the side? It is turning toward the sun.

Lesson 4
18. How do confer plants make seeds? Pollen from a small cone sticks to a large cone and seeds grow under each scale.
19. When seeds begin to grow they? Germinate
20. A new plant that has just grown out of the soil is a? Seedling
21. What do bees do to flowers? Pollinate
22. After taking a walk through a field, Jenna picked burs off her socks and dropped them. What did she do by dropping them? She helped to scatter a plant's seeds.
23. A young plant beings to grow after a seed germinates. What is this young plant called? Seedling  

24. Plants need water, air, food, and space to live and grow. Tell how 2 parts of a plant help it meet these needs. (lessons 2, 3 and 4)
Water enters a plant through the roots. Water is moved from the roots to the leaves by the stems.
Air- Plants take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny holes in leaves.
Food- Leaves use air, water, and energy from sunlight to make sugar, or food for the plant. Food moves from the leaves to other parts of the plant through the stem.
Space- After plants make seeds, the seeds are scattered. Some plants are scattered far from the parent plant. This gives new plants space to grow.

Lesson 5
25. How are flowering and coniferous plants alike? They begin the life cycles with a seed that germinates.

February 22-26 Tests

Thursday, February 25
1. Chapter 3 Science Test
A study guide will be given to students.

2. Unit 3 Comprehension Assessment
A review sheet will be given to students. Practice for this test has been done in class (CW) and at home (HW). Since this is a unit test (not a weekly test) this will have more questions and take more time. There will be multiple choice questions and short written response questions. Students will be given 2 days to complete this test.

Dressing Up for Mexico Presentation

Students must dress up to represent the country they will present on February 24.

To represent Mexico, girls must wear a colorful long skirt and long sleeve white top.

Boys must wear black pants and a long sleeve white shirt.

These should be brought to school on the 24th and can be changed into after lunch.

Sombreros are optional ;)

Mexico Facts for Presentation

Each student has already been given their facts on Mexico that they must practice for their part on stage. We will continue to practice in class, but students should also practice at home.

In case they have lost their paper, the facts are down below in addition to the order students will present.

Jenna
Mexico is located in North America and is about 3 times larger than Texas. Mexico City, the capital, is the oldest city in North America and is also one of the largest cities in the world!

Kerim
Mexico is known for their tacos, sombreros, and ancient temples. But did you know that Mexico introduced chocolate to the world and that the Aztecs used it as money?
 
Dalia
Mexico has a lot of unique animals such as the resplendent quetzal (a bird) and the volcano rabbit which lives near Mexican volcanoes. Did you know that the Chihuahua dogs are named after a city in Mexico?

Haneen
According to an article  written by Imam Isa Rojas in 2012, there were about 5,000 Muslims in Mexico and only 10 masjids. The first masjid built in Mexico was Suriya Masjid in 1989.

Aisha
Mexico has many beautiful and interesting places to visit such as an underwater museum, a giant crystal cave, hidden beaches, and a pink lagoon. If you ever need an idea for a vacation spot, try Mexico!
